801–873) who wrote on the merits of Aristotelian and Euclidean ideas of optics, favouring the emission theory since it could better quantify optical phenomena. An optic pathway glioma is a subset of low grade astrocytoma that grows in a portion of the optic pathway (optic nerve, optic chiasm, optic radiations). Optic gliomas typically grow as an infiltrative lesion with poorly defined borders. Optic nerve gliomas account for 1.7-7% of gliomas.[3 7] Approximately 75% of patients with these tumors present during the first decade of life and 90% become symptomatic before 20 years of age.[1 5] The presenting symptoms usually include slow unilateral visual loss, proptosis, decreased color vision or symptoms of raised intracranial pressure. 26 Aug 2020 Optic nerve glioma (also known as optic pathway glioma) is the most common primary neoplasm of the optic nerve. Optic pathway gliomas are In 1998, Rubtsova et al reported, in Russian, the spontaneous regression of a large and clinically symptomatic optic nerve glioma, documented by serial MRI in Optic nerve gliomas. Optic nerve gliomas are benign (non-cancerous) brain tumors that grow on the nerves that carry vision from the eyes to the brain (the optic Optic nerve glioma is a type of juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (Grade 1 astrocytoma), which occurs more commonly in children and young adults.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common brain tumor predisposition syndromes, in which affected children are prone to the development of low-grade gliomas. While NF1-associated gliomas can be found in several brain regions, the majority arise in the optic nerves, chiasm, tracts, and radiations (optic pathway gliomas; OPGs). 2005-05-15 · Optic nerve gliomas occur in 12% of patients with NF1 with most of these occuring within the first decade of life.

Another name for this tumour is a pilocytic astrocytoma. Patients who get this tumour commonly have an under lying medical condition called neurofibromatosis type 1. Optic pathway gliomas (OPGs; also referred to as optic gliomas) are low-grade astrocytic tumors that occur in the optic nerve, chiasm, or both. (See "Classification and pathologic diagnosis of gliomas".) The classification, diagnosis, natural history, and management of OPGs will be reviewed here. On histology, optic pathway gliomas are characterized by moderately and variably cellular tumor nuclear cell density, in a fibrillary background (see Figure 4 for typical histology). The tumors are invariably GFAP-positive and Rosenthal fiber/eosinophilic granular bodies are common.
